Phase II:
DIY Indoor Air Cleaner Study
About the Study
This study explores whether do-it-yourself air cleaners can effectively reduce indoor air pollution, particularly during events like wildfires and dust storms, while also promoting better health in both urban (West Denver) and rural (San Luis Valley) communities. In collaboration with these communities, we are developing a practical, user-friendly, and sustainable approach.
Participating households will receive a DIY air cleaner. Throughout the study, we will monitor how these households use and maintain the cleaners, as well as assess indoor air quality, physical and mental health, and indicators of exposure to air pollution.

The study includes two phases. The first phase, currently underway, is a 5-week feasibility period during which participating households test the air cleaners, share feedback, and help us identify any challenges or improvements. What we learn during this phase will shape the full 2.5-year study, which will examine long-term air cleaner use, indoor air quality, health outcomes, and exposure indicators across participating communities.

Coming Soon: Following the feasibility phase, we will launch the full 2.5-year study, building on what we learn in partnership with community members like you. We plan to begin recruiting households in early 2026 and look forward to continuing this work together to support healthier homes and stronger communities.
